The Solution To Pollution

With incineration and landfill charges remaining high, recycling is the obvious solution to deal with waste products.

Although, what if the waste product you have in your possession has limited recycling facilities available to be able to recycle your waste into something of value? The last resort option is landfill? Not anymore!

I was lucky to be invited to an exhibition in The Triangle Manchester, where avant-garde designer Adnan Bayyat was showcasing his thought provoking collection. Not knowing what to expect from the exhibition I was truly overwhelmed by the eclectic collection of show stopping dresses, table decorations, canvasses and accessories. However, upon closer inspection not only are all the pieces beautiful but they are all created out of what was once waste products - old books, cellophane, zips, bottle tops, polythene and plastic carrier bags to name a few of the materials used. The most show stopping piece for me, as a polythene enthusiast, had to be the most incredible couture gown created 100% out of waste orange Sainsbury's carrier bags! Around 1000 waste retail carrier bags had been crocheted together to create the elegant gown.

When experienced firsthand what beautiful pieces can be created out of what some deem waste products it makes the argument for recycling even more viable. Adnan's initiative driven by an objective to encourage sustainable use of waste materials in a creative way strengthens the argument that if you recycle waste using the right channels it creates a sustainable and positive solution to landfill. Packaging that's good enough to eat!

Packaging is just a solution to get a product to a consumer or home safe... or is it?

I came across Sod's T-shirt packaging and this is such a brilliant example of what a versatile, innovative and valuable marketing tool packaging is. The Sod's T-Shirt packaging may on first glance fool you for food but take a closer look and you will see that these 'foods' are actually t-shirts. Once you unfold these food packages you will unveil your new t-shirt!

So hopefully this will give you food for thought when you next visit your polythene packaging design brief!
